Metropolitan Cathedral of Rio de Janeiro

Metropolitan Cathedral

The new Cathedral Saint Sebastian of Rio de Janeiro in the center of the city was build between 1964 and 1997. The Cathedral is conical in form with a external height of 75 m. and a external diameterof 106 m. giving room for 20.000 standing worshipers or 5.000 seated people. The architecture of the cathedral was inspired by a Maya pyramid on the island of Yucatan in Mexico.

History:

In 1676 the bull ofpope Inocência XI created the Archdiocese of Saint Sebastian of Rio de Janeiro, but at that time there was no temple build especialy to serve as the cathedral. This explains why the Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro was housed in various different churches thru time:
1676 - A little church on the Hill of Castelo. Governr Salvador de Sá ordered to build the little church, but it was dimolished in 1922.
1734 - Igreja de Santa Cruz dos Militares was the second church to serv as cathedral but only for 3 years.
1737 - Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário e São Benidicto dos Homens Pretos kept the titel until the arrival of the Royal court of Portugal in Rio de janeiro.
1808 - Dom João VI changed the function of Cathedral again to the royal chapel close to his residence at Praça XI, Igreja Nossa Senhora do Carmo.
1964 -
January 20th., the first stone of the new Cathedral is laid by D. Jaime de Barros Câmara.
1972 - Cardinal D. Eugenio de Araujo Sales already held the first Christmas Mass in the new temple.
1976 - August 15th., the altar was christened.
